About text customization in Search campaigns

Note: Text customization was formerly known as automatically created assets

Starting May 27, 2025, automatically created assets will begin upgrading into AI Max for Search Campaigns settings as "text customization" for all campaigns. Learn more About AI Max for Search Campaigns (beta).

  • If you’re new to automatically created assets, turn on AI Max at the campaign level. Turning on AI Max will turn on text customization by default.
  • If you’re already using automatically created assets, you’ll find a banner in your Google Ads campaign settings prompting you to upgrade to AI Max. You can choose to:
    • Do nothing: The legacy automatically created assets setting will continue working as usual outside of AI Max, but you won’t be able to use AI Max.
    • Opt out of legacy Automatically Created Assets: This turns off the current automatically created asset setting and allows you to switch to text customization in AI Max.
    • Upgrade to AI Max: Opting into AI Max allows you to use text customization.

Note: Activating or deactivating AI Max may cause errors for API requests managing automatically created assets and brand settings in your campaign, as AI Max is not yet available in the API and Editor. Inform your team before proceeding with either action. Additional details can be found in our blog post about AI Max for Search campaigns.

Text customization is an opt-in, campaign-level setting that is available through AI Max for Search campaigns. Enabling the setting will help you generate additional assets (headlines and descriptions) to be used in combination with the assets you input for your responsive search ads. These new assets are generated based on your ad's unique context, which includes your domain, landing page, existing ads, and keywords in your ad group. In some cases*, text customization can use generative AI to help you generate assets that are more relevant to people’s search queries.

*Advertisers with English assets are eligible.

Note: You must opt-in to AI Max to use this feature.

Ensure your website content is accurate, not misleading, and not in violation of Google Ads policies or applicable laws. After you turn on text customization, you can monitor your ad content for accuracy in the asset details report.

Benefits of text customization

  • Performance: Increase responsive search ads performance by automatically creating more headlines and descriptions.
  • Relevance: Provide a consistent user experience across query, ad copy, and landing pages.
  • Productivity: Reduce the amount of manual work to create relevant ad copy.

How text customization works

For responsive search ads within campaigns where you turn on text customization, you instruct Google to help you generate assets from eligible sources based on relevance and predicted performance. When your ad is eligible to serve for a query, responsive search ads will use the pool of eligible advertiser-created assets and Google customized text assets and serve the combination predicted to perform best. Google customized text assets will be reflected in your responsive search ads Ad Strength rating.

Language support for text customization includes English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, and Dutch.

Advertisers with English assets are also eligible to have Google customized text assets produced with generative AI.

Note: Refer to the instructions on how to turn on text customization.

How can I view the Google customized text assets that are used in my ads?
You can view the Google customized text assets used in your ads in the asset report to view which assets are being used in the responsive search ads. To review the actual combinations and ads that served for transparency purpose, you can view the combination report.
Are Google customized text assets counted towards the responsive search ads limits?
Google customized text assets don't contribute towards the 15 headlines and 4 description lines for responsive search ads.
Are Google customized text assets the same as account level automated assets?
No. Account level automated assets, such as dynamic sitelinks, dynamic structured snippets, dynamic callouts, and more, are enabled at the account level while text customization, which helps you generate additional assets (headlines and descriptions), is a campaign level setting.
How can I view text customization reporting at scale?
Campaign level asset reporting is the best way to view text customization reporting at scale. Follow the above instructions to access campaign level asset reporting.
Are all Google customized text assets expected to serve?
Google customized text assets are eligible to serve when generated. Assets may be generated and then determined as poor performers because the context can change from generation to serving, such as editing the ad, keywords, or landing page. The system will automatically remove the asset when it determines it won’t perform after some time, if an asset is assigned a "Low performance" label, or if the source of the asset changes.
Will I be able to remove a Google customized text asset if it's not suitable?
Yes. Follow the above instructions for removing individual assets.
How can I view Ad Strength?
You can view Ad Strength in the "Ad strength" column on the Ads page.
The "Ad strength" column in the table shows an ad's Ad Strength rating such as "Average" or "Excellent." You can click the rating to view feedback on improving your ad along with a link to where you can make that change.
How is generative AI being used to create Google customized text assets?
Generative AI can generate assets to be more relevant to the searcher’s query while remaining accurate to the offering of the advertiser based on the ad’s final URL. Advertisers with English assets are eligible for Google customized text assets generated using generative AI. You can view Google customized text assets in reporting and you can also remove individual assets by following these instructions.
